Things to know before you begin
You would only need to install a MessageMaster Listener if you have remote clients that you would like to monitor. Remote clients that are not connected to your WAN can still send in their Event Log events to the central database and receive configuration from the central server just like regular clients.
How does it work? You install the MessageMaster Listener on a web-accessible machine in your DMZ. It will then receive messages from the remote clients over the Internet using port 80, and forward them to your internal MessageMaster Server.
Note: The MessageMaster Listener is already installed as part of your MessageMaster Server installation. It will service your internal clients. So, there is no need to install it on the MessageMaster Server machine, or any other internal machine on your network.
Prerequisites
Before you begin installation, be sure that you have met the software prerequisites:
- Microsoft IIS Server 5 or higher
- Windows 2000 or 2003 Server
- Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, or higher. Download the redistributable from Microsoft, and install before you begin.
- Port 80 needs to be open between your MessageMaster Listener server and your MessageMaster server. Also, for Remote Clients to be able to report in, port 80 will also need to be open inbound to the MessageMaster Listener.
Windows 2003 IIS Server Note: When you install IIS on a Windows 2003 Server, you have to explicitly tell it to install ASP Processing. This IIS component is required by MessageMaster, but is not installed with IIS 6 by default.
- Run up Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs
- Click Add/Remove Windows Components
- Select Application Server then click Details...
- Ensure that ASP.NET is checked...
- Select Internet Information Services (IIS) then click Details...
- Select World Wide Web Service then click Details...
- Ensure that Active Server Pages is Checked
Performing the Installation
The following images and descriptions provide an explanation of each step of the MessageMaster Listener installation process.
The Welcome dialog is presented when the installation starts. Press the [Next] button to continue.
Server Name: Enter the name of your MessageMaster server. You can specify it by name or by IP address.
There is nothing to change on this page. Just click Next.
Confirm the installation in order to start copying files and complete the installation of the MessageMaster Listener.
The progress dialog will be displayed while the installation process is proceeding. This will take a number of minutes.
