Installing EventMaster Syslog Collector (Optional)
Things to know before you begin
You would install one or more EventMaster Syslog Collectors if you are interested in collecting Syslog messages from network, Unix or any other devices that are capable of forwarding syslogs. The collected syslogs are forwarded to the MessageMaster database, giving you historical data, searching, and subscription-based alerting functionality just like you have for Windows Event Logs. You only need to install one EventMaster Syslog Collector in each subnet where you have devices whose syslogs you wish to collect.
A note on licensing: Installing an EventMaster Syslog Collector comes at no additional cost, so you are free to install them where it makes sense for your network. However, each device that sends a syslog message in a given 24 hour period will count as an EventMaster client, and will require a corresponding EventMaster client license to be purchased.
After your EventMaster Syslog Collector is in place, you need to configure your network and Unix devices to forward their syslog messages to the machine name or ip address of the machine where the Collector is installed.
Important Note: UDP Port 514 must be open Inbound on each Syslog Collector machine to enable it to receive the incoming syslogs.
The following images and descriptions provide an explanation of each step of the EventMaster Syslog Collector installation process:
The Welcome dialog is presented when the installation starts. Press the Next button to continue.
Server Name: Enter the name of your MessageMaster server. You can specify it by name or by IP address.
Select the folder under which to install the EventMaster Syslog Collector. All Objective Software products should be installed to the same location on any given computer.
Confirm the installation in order to start copying files and complete the installation of the EventMaster Syslog Collector.
The progress dialog will be displayed while the installation process is proceeding. This will take a number of minutes.
Configuration settings for EventMaster Syslog Collectors are controlled from the MessageMaster console. They are found on the Management menu, under EventMaster Configuration.
